Our Current Project

We’re excited about our planned 2023 title in partnership with the Iowa Environmental Council. Our goal is to help create a shift in Iowans’ relationship to our waterways and our implied future with water by connecting with one another through powerful storytelling.

The Oxbow Project is modeled after The Correspondence Project, directed by Iowa artist Kathranne Knight. In 2015, Knight invited people from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives to write and reflect together on a selected theme.

Our goal for the project is to gather diverse circles of 6-9 residents from four communities, Tama County (Meskwaki Settlement), Perry Iowa, Southwest Iowa, and Storm Lake, to engage in a shared reflection on the subject of Iowa’s water and waterways. The writing will be a reflective form of interaction in which short daily writings and a photograph on a specific prompt or word that “speaks” to the group for a defined period of one week.

Sessions for the Oxbow Project will take place during April. Each of our four community groups will be facilitated by a notable Iowa writer or artist who will guide the participants in sharing writing and images that deepen their connection to one another and to their shared watersheds and environment.
