Above and Beyond Cancer – Book Launch!

“Unexpected stories of triumph and survival from the highest mountain to the cornfields of Iowa produced through a two-year community writing process from over 100 contributors from coast to coast with 100 percent of the proceeds go to our partner.”

The philosophy of the Drake Community Press is that knowledge and expertise flows both ways between campus and community partners. We call this 360 degree learning. Collaboration between the Drake Community Press and Above and Beyond Cancer gives students the opportunity to collaborate with community professionals in a variety of fields, and with the participants whose voices contribute to the narratives we intend to share. Students learn about the transformational journeys of AB+C participants who inspire the public by devoting themselves to a life of advocacy, and leading an example for healthy living and cancer prevention in their communities. Lasting relationships between Drake and the broader Des Moines community form as students involve themselves in the work and experience of Above and Beyond Cancer through physical training courses, community service events, and educational meetings.

The stories gathered are those of Iowans touched by cancer, but the publication, which includes professional full-color illustrations of the journeys made by patients and survivors of A+BC participants on climbing treks around the world, will inspire readers far beyond our state.
